Nigeria end African Athletics Championship with 12 medals

Team Nigeria has officially concluded its campaign at the 2026 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, finishing with a hard-earned total haul of 12 medals.

The championship, which wrapped up over the weekend at the University of Ghana Stadium, saw the country cement its place among Africa's elite track and field nations, rounded off by a spectacular golden finish in the relays.

The Grand Finale: Golden Relay Double
Nigeria’s traditional dominance in the relay events proved to be the ultimate saving grace as the championships drew to a close.

Women's 4x400m Gold (The Decider): Team Nigeria officially locked in their 12th medal in spectacular fashion, storming to victory in the women's 4x400m relay final to put a golden exclamation point on their Accra campaign.

Women’s 4x100m Quadruple Success: Earlier in the weekend, the star-studded quartet of Rosemary Chigozie, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma, and 17-year-old anchor Miracle Ezechukwu clocking a blazing 42.94 seconds to capture Nigeria’s fourth consecutive continental title in the event, beating out rival blocks from Liberia and host nation Ghana.

Men’s 4x100m Silver: The men’s short relay quartet (Favor Ashe, James Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin, and Chidera Ezeakor) secured a hard-fought Silver medal in 38.70s, narrowly finishing behind an inspired Côte d'Ivoire team.

Star Performers of the Championship
While the final medal tally of 12 reflects a highly competitive field across the continent, several Nigerian heavyweights delivered on huge expectations:

Tobi Amusan: The hurdles icon led the charge earlier in the week, successfully defending her continental pedigree by striking individual gold to spearhead Nigeria's track dominance.

Mixed 4x400m Relay: The mixed quarter-mile relay squad also put on a masterclass, running away with a gold medal to emphasize Nigeria's depth in the 400m circuits.

Rosemary Chukwuma: Proved to be an invaluable asset to the track contingent, picking up an individual silver in a razor-thin women's 100m final before returning to anchor the golden 4x100m squad.

Chidera Ezeakor: Displayed phenomenal form to claim a bronze medal in a stacked men’s 100m individual final.

With 12 medals secured, Nigeria proved its elite status on the track, particularly in the sprints, hurdles, and relays. While the team faced fierce challenges in the middle-distance and field events from powerhouses like Kenya and South Africa, the final golden relay surge ensured the contingent leaves Accra with their heads held incredibly high as attention shifts to the upcoming global athletic calendar.
