Otti hosts Super Eagles Chukwueze, unveils Abia stadium city plan
UMUAHIA, Nigeria — Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially unveiled a multi-billion naira blueprint for an ultra-modern "Abia Stadium City"—a flagship sports infrastructure project designed to position the state as a premier regional hub for sports development, tourism, and youth empowerment.
The ambitious master plan was announced at the Government House in Umuahia during a high-profile reception hosted by the Governor for Super Eagles and AC Milan winger, Samuel Chukwueze, who hails from the state.
A Vision Beyond Football: The 'Stadium City' Blueprint
Speaking during the presentation, Governor Otti emphasized that the project is not just a standard sports arena, but an expansive, integrated economic ecosystem. The administration’s vision addresses a long-standing deficit in world-class athletic facilities within the South-East region.
The proposed Abia Stadium City complex is slated to feature:
A FIFA-Standard Main Bowl: Boasting modern seating capacity, natural turf, and cutting-edge media and VAR capabilities to host international fixtures.
An Olympic-Grade Aquatics Center: Equipped for competitive swimming and diving tournaments.
Indoor Sports Halls & Training Pitches: Dedicated facilities for basketball, volleyball, boxing, and athletics track-and-field events.
Commercial & Hospitality Zones: Integrated sports-themed hotels, retail spaces for global brands, a sports medicine center, and recreational parks to ensure the complex remains active and self-sustaining year-round.
"Our goal is simple: to build an ecosystem where talent meets world-class infrastructure. This Stadium City will not only discover the next generation of Samuel Chukwuezes, but it will also drive tourism, create thousands of direct jobs, and stimulate the local economy."
— Governor Alex Otti
Celebrating a Local Icon
The unveiling served as a backdrop to celebrate Samuel Chukwueze, whose remarkable journey from the grassroots academies of Umuahia to the elite tiers of European football—including his standout performances for Spanish side Villarreal and Italian giants AC Milan—continues to inspire millions of Nigerian youths.
Governor Otti commended the winger for being an exemplary ambassador for Abia State and the nation, pointing to his discipline and resilience on the global stage. As a token of appreciation and to deepen his ties to local sports development, the state government extended an invitation for Chukwueze to act as a mentor and ambassador for the state's upcoming grassroots sports initiatives.
In his remarks, Chukwueze expressed immense gratitude to the Governor for the warm reception and lauded the Stadium City initiative.
"Growing up here, we didn’t have facilities like this. To see the Governor mapping out a vision of this scale is incredible. It will change the lives of so many young athletes in Abia who just need a proper pitch and the right environment to be seen by the world."

Implementation and Economic Impact
The state government has indicated that preliminary site assessments and architectural designs are already entering advanced stages. To ensure fiscal sustainability and swift execution, the Otti administration plans to leverage a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, drawing investment from local and international sports consortiums.
The Ministry of Lands and Housing, alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, are expected to finalize land acquisition and zoning frameworks in the coming weeks. For a state already experiencing an infrastructural face-lift under the current administration, the Abia Stadium City is being positioned as a crown jewel intended to redefine the economic landscape of Umuahia and Aba.
