NiMet predicts thunderstorms, rain nationwide
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorms and rainfall throughout multiple regions of Nigeria spanning Monday through Wednesday.
NiMet communicated this projection through its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, cautioning that intense winds may accompany thunderstorms in certain localities.
Regarding Monday morning, the agency anticipates thunderstorms coupled with light precipitation across portions of Taraba and Kebbi states.
The forecast indicates scattered thunderstorms with moderate precipitation across sections of the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi during the latter part of the day.
"Within the North-Central region, thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are anticipated across portions of Niger State throughout the morning period.
"During the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected across the majority of the region," the agency stated.
NiMet anticipates overcast conditions across the southern region on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light precipitation across sections of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
The forecast predicts thunderstorms accompanied by light precipitation across the region during the afternoon or evening hours.
Concerning Tuesday, NiMet anticipates partial cloud coverage across the northern region during the morning, with thunderstorms and light precipitation across portions of Taraba.
During the latter part of the afternoon and evening, the northern region is anticipated to experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate precipitation across the majority of its territory.
The agency stated: "Throughout the North-Central region, partly cloudy atmospheric conditions are anticipated during morning hours.
"As the day progresses, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are projected to occur across portions of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau States."
Regarding the southern region, NiMet forecasted predominantly cloudy skies throughout Tuesday morning, succeeded by thunderstorms and light precipitation affecting sections of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South.
On Wednesday, the agency projected partly cloudy conditions throughout the northern region, with thunderstorms and moderate precipitation anticipated over numerous states during morning hours.
The impacted localities encompass Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
NiMet additionally forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by moderate precipitation extending across the majority of the northern region during the latter portion of Wednesday.
Concerning the North-Central region, it projected partly cloudy conditions during morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms and light precipitation over portions of the FCT, Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa.
The agency forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by moderate precipitation across the majority of the region as the day advances.
Throughout the southern region, NiMet projected cloudy atmospheric conditions during Wednesday morning, with thunderstorms and moderate precipitation anticipated across most areas as the day progresses.
It cautioned that powerful winds might precede thunderstorms in regions where rainfall is anticipated, encouraging inhabitants to implement appropriate safety measures.
"The public should exercise adequate precaution and ensure that unsecured objects are secured to prevent collision," NiMet stated.
It recommended that motorists refrain from operating vehicles during intense rainfall and encouraged inhabitants to disconnect electrical devices from power outlets during thunderstorms.
"Maintain distance from tall vegetation to mitigate risk from descending branches and compromised trees," the agency recommended.
NiMet further advised aviation operators to procure airport-specific meteorological reports and flight documentation to facilitate efficient operations.
