Iheanacho credits ‘god of soccer’ for title victory
Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has credited the “God of Soccer” after helping Celtic F.C. secure a dramatic 2025/26 Scottish Premiership title on the final day of the season.
Fondly known as "Senior Man," the 29-year-old Super Eagles striker lifted the trophy following Celtic's thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Heart of Midlothian F.C. at a packed Celtic Park, securing the club's 56th league crown.
"God of Soccer Was on Our Side"Speaking on the pitch while clutching the league silverware, an ecstatic Iheanacho admitted to reporters that the winner-takes-all finale carried immense psychological pressure: "It feels good. It feels so good I can't let go of this trophy. It was a big tension and it's a massive pressure. But we know what to do today and we did it. They [Hearts] were a very strong side. But the God of Soccer was on our side today." He also took to social media to celebrate, posting a picture with the trophy and a cheeky caption: "If you need a trophy, call me. What a dramatic season. MostHighGod has done it."
How the Final Day Unfolded
The final match of the season was a high-stakes encounter fraught with anxiety for Celtic fans:
The Halftime Deadlock: The teams went into the break locked at 1-1 after Hearts' Lawrence Shankland cancelled out a penalty opener from Celtic’s Arne Engels.
The Substitution: Seeking urgency, the manager brought Iheanacho on at halftime. The Nigerian forward provided a crucial attacking spark and injected much-needed energy into the final third.
The Late Surge: Celtic finally broke Hearts' stubborn resistance in the 87th minute through Daizen Maeda, before Callum Osmand sealed the 3-1 victory in stoppage time, igniting wild celebrations at Parkhead.
A Crucial Role in a Dream Debut Season
The triumph marks the first top-flight league title of Iheanacho’s professional career, adding to an illustrious trophy cabinet that already features the English FA Cup, the EFL Cup, and a FIFA U-17 World Cup medal.
Despite battling recurring hamstring injuries earlier in the season, Iheanacho has been a decisive factor in Celtic’s late-season title surge. With 8 goals in 22 appearances, he has officially become the highest-scoring Nigerian in Celtic's history.
His knack for clutch goals—including a dramatic 99th-minute winning penalty against Motherwell just days prior—ensured Celtic stayed in the driver's seat to cross the ultimate finish line.
