Why I turned down Galatasaray’s number 9 shirt — Osimhen
Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has clarified his reasons for declining the chance to don Galatasaray’s iconic number nine jersey, opting instead to retain his number 45 shirt as the new season approaches.
Osimhen, who made a permanent move to the Turkish champions last summer after a successful loan period, has rapidly become one of the club's pivotal players. His outstanding performances have garnered admiration from fans and solidified his status as a key figure at Rams Park.
The Nigerian striker was anticipated to assume Galatasaray’s number nine shirt, a number associated with elite attacking players and previously linked to Mauro Icardi. Nevertheless, Osimhen chose to stick with the number 45, which he has worn since his arrival at the club.
In explaining his choice, Osimhen stated that the number has brought him good luck and that he prefers to continue with the jersey that has served him well.
As reported by Sabah Spor, a Turkish sports news outlet on its X account on Thursday, Osimhen was quoted saying, “I believe you will sell more shirts, but I think you will understand my perspective. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” according to Sabah Spor.
“I want to continue with the same number,” he added.
Since his permanent transfer from Napoli, Osimhen has become a fan favorite, contributing crucial goals and strong performances for the Yellow-Reds.
The Nigerian striker recently opened his preseason goal tally during Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul, as the club continues its preparations for the upcoming season.
Osimhen will now strive to maintain his impressive form as Galatasaray aims to defend their domestic title and compete vigorously in the new season.
