Nigerian students win gold at Spelling Bee World Cup in China

In a historic victory for the African continent, Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the inaugural 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.

The triumph marks a major milestone for Nigeria, which was making its first-ever appearance at the global competition after advancing through grueling national and continental qualification stages.

The four-member Nigerian delegation arrived in Shanghai to compete against the world’s finest young orthographers from over 20 nations, including the United States, Canada, Singapore, and South Africa.

The brilliant young minds who secured the historic gold include:

*Oluwadamilola Adeolu* (St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti) — The reigning 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion.
*Abdurrahman Yusuf* (Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin) — Third-place finisher at the African championship.
*Maryam Yusuf*(Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin) — Key medalist in the World Cup finals.
*Chinedu Okediachi* (Madonna International Schools, Asaba).

Nigeria’s road to the world stage began at the domestic level with the Nigeria Spelling Bee, followed by a standout performance at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where the team finished as the second-best overall squad on the continent.

The inaugural Spelling Bee World Cup, which ran from July 10 to July 20, 2026, brought together top-tier national champions to test their vocabulary, phonetic mastery, and cognitive stamina.

Before departing for China, 14-year-old team lead Oluwadamilola Adeolu expressed confidence in her preparation, stating her goal was to boost her vocabulary on the global stage and "bring the trophy back home." The team successfully delivered on that promise, out-spelling highly competitive international brackets to claim the ultimate group prize in their category.

The historic feat has triggered widespread celebration across Nigeria's educational sector. School administrators at Ar-Raheem International College and St. Lawrence Metropolitan College publicly praised the students for raising the national flag high in Asia.

Recognizing the magnitude of the achievement, government officials have begun stepping in to honor the students. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is among the state executives who have pledged substantial financial support to reward the young scholars for their academic excellence and global representation.
