NDLEA intercepts ₦10.4bn Canadian Loud at Lagos port
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the successful interception of a massive consignment of "Canadian Loud," a high-potency strain of cannabis, at the Tincan Island Port in Lagos. The shipment, weighing 4,173.5 kilograms, is estimated to have a street value of ₦10.4 billion.
Details of the Operation
The seizure was the result of a sophisticated, intelligence-led operation that spanned over two months. Key details include:
Global Tracking: The shipment originated in Toronto, Canada, on March 28, 2026. It was moved by rail to Montreal and then shipped to Tanger Med Port in Morocco before arriving in Lagos on May 9.
The Discovery: On May 12, NDLEA operatives, in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and international partners (including the UK Home Office and the US DEA), conducted a joint examination of the container.
The Concealment: The drugs were professionally hidden inside two used vehicles—a Ford bus and a Mercedes-Benz C300—contained within the shipment.
Broader Context: This bust follows another recent major operation in Lekki, Lagos, where NDLEA recovered over ₦5.8 billion worth of similar substances from a stash house.
Official Reaction
NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa described the interception as a powerful message to transnational drug syndicates. He emphasized that the agency is increasingly capable of dismantling complex supply chains through inter-agency synergy and international cooperation.
Authorities warned that the scale of this shipment highlights a coordinated attempt by international cartels to flood the Nigerian market with potent synthetic drugs, reinforcing the need for heightened vigilance at all entry points.
