Eagles to know 2027 AFCON qualifying foes Tuesday

The journey to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) begins in earnest as Nigeria’s Super Eagles and 47 other African nations prepare to discover their qualifying group opponents.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will officially conduct the qualifying group stage draw on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. The event is scheduled to commence at 15:00 local time (12:00 GMT / 1:00 PM Nigerian time).

The Draw Mechanics & Format
The qualification path for the tournament—officially dubbed "AFCON PAMOJA 2027"—will follow a structured format:

48 Teams Involved: The draw features 42 highest-ranked African nations (who received automatic byes) alongside the 6 winners who advanced from the preliminary rounds completed earlier this year.

12 Groups of 4: The 48 countries will be seeded into four pots based on their latest FIFA world rankings and drawn into 12 distinct groups (Groups A to L).

The Qualification Criteria: Under normal circumstances, the top two teams from each group automatically book their ticket to the tournament.

The Co-Host Exception
The 2027 edition will be historic as the first tournament co-hosted by three nations: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Because all three East African host nations are participating in the qualifiers but have already guaranteed automatic spots as hosts, only one additional team will qualify from any group that features Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania.

Super Eagles Status
As one of the continent's football heavyweights, Nigeria's Super Eagles are expected to be among the top-seeded teams in Pot 1. This seeding shields them from drawing fellow continental giants like Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, or reigning champions Côte d'Ivoire in the group stage.

Condensed Match Timetable (2026–2027)
With just 13 months remaining before the tournament finals kick off in East Africa, CAF has organized a condensed, fast-paced qualification window across three primary FIFA international breaks:

Matchdays 1 & 2: September 21 – October 6, 2026

Matchdays 3 & 4: November 9 – 17, 2026

Matchdays 5 & 6: March 22 – 30, 2027

The final tournament is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027. Following a string of mixed competitive results over the past year, Nigerian football fans will be watching the Cairo draw closely to see how smooth or turbulent the Super Eagles' road to "Pamoja 2027" will be.
