Abia secures conviction of two child sexual offenders

The Abia State Government has achieved a significant milestone by securing the convictions of two individuals guilty of child sexual offenses, who received sentences of 30 and 10 years in prison, respectively, in separate defilement cases. This development is regarded as a major advancement in the state's efforts to combat sexual and gender-based violence.

One of the convicted individuals, a 35-year-old man from Akwa Ibom State, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Family Court at the High Court in Umuahia for the defilement of a five-year-old girl. In contrast, another 32-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years after being found guilty of defiling a 13-year-old girl.

Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, made this announcement on Tuesday in Umuahia during a press briefing regarding the outcomes of the recent State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu emphasized that these convictions highlight the administration's strict zero-tolerance stance on sexual offenses and serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

He pointed out that these convictions represent significant accomplishments of the Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre located at the General Hospital in Aba.

"The centre has consistently provided coordinated medical, psychosocial, and referral services to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence," he stated.

The commissioner also revealed that the facility is currently managing two new cases involving a 60-year-old woman who allegedly experienced gang rape and a five-year-old child who was a victim of defilement.

Furthermore, he mentioned, "The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has been actively implementing the state's social protection framework by identifying and assisting vulnerable residents in need of immediate medical and humanitarian aid."

Regarding the convictions, Ngozi Felix, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, noted that one of the offenders had fled to Nasarawa State following the crime but was subsequently tracked down and returned to Abia by the police for prosecution.

She characterized the prosecution as "one of the quickest documented within Nigeria's network of Sexual Assault Referral Centres," crediting the result to the cooperation among the Ministries of Health, Justice, Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, along with the Nigeria Police Force.

Felix further praised the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, for the command's assistance throughout the investigation and prosecution of sexual violence cases.

She stated that the administration led by Governor Alex Otti is dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable residents and ensuring justice for survivors of sexual violence.
