Public Alert: NAFDAC warns consumers against suspected fake toothpaste in circulation
In accordance with its commitment to public education and consumer awareness, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a cautionary notice regarding the presence of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste products circulating throughout Nigeria.
According to ConsumerConnect, NAFDAC has reported that adulterated ORACIRE+ Toothpaste products are being marketed in the country as if they were the legitimately registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The regulatory authority in the health sector indicated that this public notice was prompted by a formal grievance and intelligence gathered from market monitoring regarding the extensive circulation of these suspected counterfeit items across Nigeria.
The agency further noted that market surveillance operations were conducted at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos State.
NAFDAC disclosed that investigators discovered the suspected counterfeit product bears a striking resemblance to the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in terms of packaging aesthetics and visual presentation.
The agency underscored that the close resemblance between the authentic and counterfeit versions has created considerable difficulty for consumers in identifying the suspected counterfeit product from the legitimate ORACARE+ Toothpaste when shopping in retail environments.
NAFDAC stated: "Counterfeit personal care products may not meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers."
The agency emphasized that the origin, composition, safety, and quality attributes of the suspected counterfeit product remain unverified.
Furthermore, NAFDAC has undertaken market surveillance initiatives to determine the extent of availability and distribution channels of the suspected counterfeit toothpaste.
The regulatory body has also directed all NAFDAC Zonal Directors and State Coordinators to conduct investigations into the product's availability and distribution within their respective jurisdictions and implement suitable regulatory measures.
Consequently, NAFDAC appeals to consumers and medical professionals to exercise heightened caution and communicate any observations regarding the distribution of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste to the appropriate authorities.
The agency said such reports could be made at the nearest NAFDAC office, by calling the designated number, or sending an e-mail to the agency’s e-mail.
